Without light we see nothing. Our eyes will compensate in a darkened room, but the camera will not. As Dan Rather said in the title of his book “The Camera Never Blinks”, it doesn’t.
There is nothing worse that bad lighting in video except maybe bad audio. Lighting has always been one of the areas where I am most unsure of myself. After all I started out in front of the camera and I was the subject being lit. Now much of my work is behind the lens and I keep searching for helpful bits of information to improve.
I stumbled across a series of videos the other day by Ken Henderson an excellent photographer in the UK. His videos deal with lighting portraits, but there is a lot of good information in there. Here is the first in the series. You can get to the others via this link . Enjoy.
